THE VETERAN: David Cortez
(Audio Interview coming soon)
Age: 25
Of The Apple in the Tree
Why he rocks: David sings with such emotion that you can't help but feel drawn to him. You connect with him through his lyrics, his voice and the music. His sad eyes or knowing smile suggest there's more there than he's letting on, which adds to the mystery of the alt-country singer/songwriter.
Song: Sometimes a small town gets too crowded and you feel an itch to leave. Often we head west. The Apple in the Tree's song "The West" captures the longing for something new, missing an old love, regret and hope. To really experience this song you need to hear it live with the full band.
Next show: Wednesday, June 25th at The Incubator in McAllen

Favorite part of your body?
"I'm trying to balance it here, because there's the part I touch the most and then there's the ... I'm talking about my face! I guess my beard because it's something I can constantly be changing - my facial hair. It changes with my mood."
What 3 qualities make a girl sexy?
"I'd say confidence, humor and midriff and hips."
Best part about being a musician?
"How many people have said the chicks? I'm not going to say the chicks. The best part is having control of the stage for however long you're playing and getting to express yourself in a position where not everybody understands what you're saying. There are times when I can say things that are blatantly honest, and maybe not everyone picks up on them, but I get to say it out loud and that's the cathartic part of it, is that I'm saying it, so it's just up to people to listen for it. And for ten years I've had an excuse to hang out with my friends."
Would you rather...date a hot chick or one with a sense of humor?
"A sense of humor makes a girl hot. I've gotten to a point in my life where the personality, humor and what makes up a person in reality is a bit more long-lasting than looks."
Celebrity crush?
"I have not been able to get Reese Witherspoon out of my head since she played June Carter in Walk the Line. I think it was the dark hair and southern accent that just really killed me."
Best pickup line?
"Verbally, I don't have a pick up line. Buying a drink through the bartender for somebody is a nice pick up line, I think."
Favorite drink?
"Southern Comfort on ice and soda."
Would you ever date an older woman and why?
"I see no problem with dating older women. If the feelings are there, if there's a connection, then what is the problem with dating an older woman? It's the same thing with gay marriage, what's the difference? You can't control how people feel."
Have you ever lied to a girl to get what you want?
"If it's to get her to stop asking ‘is something wrong', yes. I've lied so she stops worrying about how she looks in her jeans."
Would you ever strip for money?
"If I had the body for it, yeah."
You're stuck on a desert island, what 3 albums do you have with you?
"Tom Petty's Wildflowers and Echo and Minus the Bear's Highly Refined Pirates."
Best/worst song to jam out to?
"Tom Petty's song "Honey Bee" - that song's awesome. The worst song to rock out to would be like, "Tears in Heaven" by Eric Clapton. You just can't rock out to that."
Why is music important to you?
"I've grown up around it, my dad was in bands and one of the coolest things I'll ever remember from my childhood is walking by my parents' bedroom and seeing my dad singing to my mom with his guitar. I feel like no matter what has happened in my life, the good, the bad, music has always been there and has always just taken me away from the bad or being the source of the good."
Best rumor you've heard about yourself?
"That I like to experiment in bed.
If you had any other talent what would it be?
"I wish I could write eloquently enough to write a book."
