SCENARIO 5: Your girlfriend was keeping secrets from you.

What they did:

After it was revealed that Serena watched a man die, she took her sweet time to let boyfriend Dan know what the situation was. She even went so far as to fabricate a story to make it seem like she cheated on him so he would stop asking questions about her secret. Serena's dishonesty and inability to open up to her boyfriend essentially caused the end of the relationship.

What Michael Yatar, 22, would do:

"I'd feel betrayed and like the trust is broken," he said. "Of course, I'd first find out why she hid it from me and go from there. If the reason is valid enough (I'd forgive her)."

But Yatar, a Pharr native, said his willingness to continue in the relationship would depend on the severity of the secret. For example, if her secret was that she was a murder, Yatar said, "I guess I would try to get away from her."

The lesson: Help her feel comfortable about opening up to you ... unless she's a murderer. If she is, run.
