Texas Rodeo, a bar aimed at attracting the country music crowd, plans to debut Friday in McAllen's Downtown Entertainment District.

Texas Rodeo will open at the intersection of South 17th Street and Eerie Ave. The free-standing white building ranks as one of Downtown’s largest nightlife venues. It features a 40 feet by 20 feet dance floor, a large stage for live music and massive restrooms. The women’s lavatory, for example, has 11 stalls.

Oscar Saldaña, Texas Rodeo’s general manager, says the bar will aim for the same crowd as long-time North 10th Street club Hillbilly’s. The new venue has a 40-foot long full liquor main bar, a second bar near the door for beer and tequila, and an area reserved for beer bins. He says drink prices will stay cheap — $3 for a beer and $8 for a shot of Patron Tequila. Texas Rodeo will also offer bottle service in VIP booths, which have semi-private enclosures.

The bar will open Wednesday through Sunday, reserving one night a week for tejano music and the rest for country tunes. Saldaña says in the fall his venue will host live country music, booking artists Kevin Fowler or Cory Marrow.

“There’s a lot of country people from McAllen who will go out to Wink’s in Brownsville,” he says. “They don’t have to anymore because we’re here.”
