BAND PROFILE: Cafe Tacvba
For two straight years Latin rock has delivered McAllen a holiday present.
And what a gift it is. It's got 19 years of musical excellence. Multiple Latin Grammy nominations and wins. Punk, new wave and indie rock influences.
Style unmatched.
Enjoy your gift McAllen, because Mexico's Café Tacvba is back this holiday season. The quartet from a sprawling Mexico City suburb will play Saturday night at the McAllen Convention Center. For Tacvba fans, the show comes about a year after the band's last stop in McAllen. They played last year during the first week of December at the Las Palmas Event Center.
The guys have gone around the world since their last stop in town.
They played a blazing set at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. They took the main stage at the Southern California uber fest, playing during around 5 p.m. as the desert sun started its descent. They played the same stage that weekend as Prince, Pink Floyd's Roger Waters and a reunited Portishead.
Tacvba, which features a versatile style that can rock a crowd or mellow them out, played arguably the most high energy set of that weekend.
During the band's nearly two decade life, critics have compared them to some serious rock royalty. They've been called Mexico's Beatles and the Spanish Radiohead. They've been hailed for musical styles in the same vein as Johnny Rotten, Mo Town and psychedelic rock. Impressive, no wonder Coachella dug them so hard.
After that show, the band headed overseas for a massive Japanese tour, which included playing the island nation's biggest festival with Coldplay, Fatboy Slim and the Sex Pistols.
And now their back, doing a loop around the United States. And their luggage might be a bit heavier.
Café Tacvba won two Latin Grammy's this month, winning song of the year for "Esta Vez" and alternative song of the year for "Volver a Comenzar." Both songs feature on the critical acclaimed 2007 release Sino.
Enjoy your present McAllen. Happy holidays from the top tier of Latin Rock.
