The Rio Grande Valley always gets flak for being behind the times.

But with the New Kids on the Block set to headline this year's Borderfest, one thing is clear: The Valley loves its ‘80s and doesn't care what anyone else thinks. And by holding on to nostalgia this long, we just might have found ourselves on the cutting edge.

The decade of decadence's influence is apparent in several designers' spring 2009 collections - shoulder pads, acid-washed denim and jackets with rolled-up sleeves, a la Miami Vice. Jumpsuits have been spotted on the runways and on celebrities, as well.

Nostalgia for the decade that gave us NKOTB, video games, the Rubik's cube, jelly bracelets and MTV is far from over. M3 Productions hopes to unite the Valley's yearning for the past at its annual ‘80s Prom tomorrow night at Moods Lounge in downtown McAllen.

The prom focuses on the fashion and icons of the 1980s, and while it is a prom, you're not required to wear a dress with poofy sleeves or a polyester tuxedo. At the film production company's event last year, partiers came dressed as members of the Cobra Kai (villains from 1984's The Karate Kid) and in sorbet-hued T-shirts with white jackets and rolled-up sleeves.

Several DJs will be spinning hits of the ‘80s, and Moods lounge will have drink specials all night long. For those going for the full ‘80s prom experience, there will be an appropriate cheesy backdrop for photos. The first 50 people in line will receive a swag bag full of ‘80s goodies, locally produced arts and crafts and more. The prom queen and king will also receive a special swag bag, with even more stuff!
