ORFY: The Stage Mami

Orfy knows her part well.

She's a got a wardrobe full of skimpy, skin-tight outfits tailored to emphasize her, um, J. Lo-esque assets. She's seducing local dance floors these days with her own brand of naughty disco-pop, a Lady Gaga-inspired sound that's perfect for a good night of grinding (her first original song, "Love Triangle," is about lusting after two separate guys).

Glance at her ever-bare midriff and you might mistake her for any other dolled-up Valley vixen with a voice via autotune. Nothing about her flat belly would ever suggest a baby spent nine months in there, but then again, a lot of things about Orfy are more than meets the eye.

Festiva caught up with Orfy as she prepped for her weekly strut at McAllen's Yacht Club last Thursday night. The singer had just gotten back in town from an exhausting trip to Miami.

"I have zero ganas to be here tonight," she said, but that was only the fatigue talking. Once Orfy's heels hit the stage, she knows that's exactly where she wants to be.

Less than 10 years ago, you were more likely to catch the 2003 graduate of Hidalgo High School sporting a sombrero than a pair of stilettos. Her classmates know her better as Orfelinda Marichalar, the freckle-faced girl who spent the early half of her 23 years playing violin and flute in a mariachi troupe.

Orfy the dancefloor diva is a fairly recent incarnation, a character she had plenty of time to dream up while on hiatus during her pregnancy.

Spending those two years on the sidelines was "terrible," she recalls, but she made use of the time by giving her unborn daughter some early exposure to the family business.

"I (used to) sing to her all the time, ever since she was in me," Orfy said.

The result? Juliet Montserrat, already singing and dancing at 18 months old, is a starlet in the making.

The showbiz gene actually comes from both parents. Orfy's husband is a musician himself, performing in her band and acting as her producer and manager.

"He does everything for me," she said. "We're both in the same world."

Lucky for Orfy, that world is right under the stage lights.
