HOT SPOTS: Martini's

These days it's all about martinis.

Sorry margaritas and sex on the beach...there's a new sheriff in town. If you haven't tried a cucumber martini, chances are you've been soaking in the suds of the beer world. Step out of the ice chest and give these ultra-sophisticated drinks a try. Trust us, these pack a hefty punch. They aren't your grandpa's ‘ol cough medicine.

The digs: Martini's received only minor adjustments from when it was Iguana's. The DJ booth is gone (thank goodness) and owners added a few high tops to the middle of the bar. Side booths are comfy, but space is limited. You can call ahead to reserve a table. If you're in the mood to pick up a yummy martini on the way home, there's some bar space just for you.

A party every day of the week: Martini Manic Monday, 10 p.m. to closing. Here you'll find $3 House martini, $3 Cosmo and $3 Sexy Martini. A good way to start the week. Tuesday's are ladies night. Starting at 5 p.m. well drinks are $1

Once hump day comes around things get rockin' with live music from Hyndcite. Ask your bartender about any drink specials.

Karaoke fans will definitely want to show up on Thursday night for a sing along party. Not much of a performer, knock back a cold one for only  $2.

Finally, at the end of the work week Martini's offers a little treat. $2 martini's (might I suggest he Mango and cucumber), $2 Smirnoff Citron margarita and $10 Mongolian Mother (You'll have to ask what the heck that is...I still don't know).

Who goes: You'll find a pretty good looking crowd here. Mostly young, mostly single. It's more of a chill out martini bar than your run of the mill club. Guys and gals still dress things up a bit, but it's the Valley. We wear heels with everything.

The verdict: Once the night progresses it really turns into a party. Happy hour is fairly quiet which is a nice way to unwind and perhaps start the weekend. It's a place in arms reach if you're in North McAllen...less driving the better. Drinks are tasty and the place is free from those stuffy crowds.
