CREATIVE WRITING: ‘Noises from Upstairs' by Alyssa Thomas
As Kate turned the door knob to her house, she heard a loud crash in one of the upstairs room. Alarmed, Kate and Stephanie crept into the entry way, thinking of what the noise could have been caused from.
“It was probably just the cat” Kate decided.
“Oh ok. So, where do you want this stuff?” asked Stephanie.
“Just set the groceries on the counter. I want to get started already,” answered Kate.
“Awesome. I can’t wait for this party. And you make the best pastries ever.”
“Thanks Steph. You want to help me bake?”
“Uhh…I said your pastries were good, I never said I’d help you though. I’m gonna look through your closet to see what I’m gonna wear tonight.”
“Typical,” murmured Kate.
Stephanie skipped off to Kate’s room upstairs, while Kate began to remove everything out of the grocery bags. She had gotten everything she needed to make crème brûlée and chocolate éclairs, and she was quite excited to show off her pastry skills. She had just started her crème brûlée when she heard another crash from upstairs.
“What the hell is wrong with that cat?” mumbled Kate.
She continued with her recipe, until she heard a scream.
“That’s it. Now Princess has gotten Steph all spooked” stated Kate.
She quickly removed her apron to check on Stephanie until she saw Princess coming out of the laundry room, just down the hall from the kitchen. Princess looked as if she had just risen from a nap because she began to stretch her hind legs lazily.
“You were in the laundry room this whole time, Princess?” Kate asked in alarm.
As soon as she said that, she heard an earsplitting scream, followed by, “KATE!” Kate ran to her cell phone and dialed 9-1-1. She didn’t know what to say to them. My friend is upstairs screaming, and she heard a crash? No, that could mean anything. What if she just saw a spider? Kate hung up the phone before it could ring. Silently, she walked up the stairs to her room; the second door to the right. The door was closed. Kate walked up to her door, and ever so gently turned the knob. There was no one in the room. The window was wide open. Kate could see muddy footprints from the open window to the bathroom. Her vase was broken along with her lamp, and her chair was on its side. Kate walked over to her bathroom door. In the bathroom, she noticed a broken mirror tainted with traces of blood. Silently crying, and shaking violently, Kate walked closer to the bathroom door at the end which led to another bedroom previously belonging to her older sister. She was about to open the door when she heard him.
“Who is Kate? Who is Kate? WHO IS KATE?”
“She’s my cat,” Stephanie replied, stuttering.
“Well, your dumb Kate is not going to save you, you stupid girl. It’s a cat. What the hell do you think its going to do?”
“I don’t know”, answered Stephanie.
Kate stood at the door, a million things swimming through her head. Who was this guy, and what did he want? What do I do? She could run to the nearest house and get help. She could run downstairs and call 9-1-1. She could open the door and run him off. Kate ran as fast as she could without making a sound out the bathroom, through her room, all the way down the hall to the last bedroom in the far left. Hastily, Kate grabbed the cordless phone from her brother’s nightstand and dived underneath her brother’s bed, crying. Kate dialed 9-1-1, hoping for some kind of miracle. Would they save her friend in time?
“Yes, my friend is in trouble. A stranger broke in and…and…I am under a bed…he has Steph.” cried Kate
She waited until she heard footsteps going down the stairs. She waited until she heard footsteps out the door. She waited until there was complete silence. Immediately, she got out from under the bed and ran to her sister’s room. They were gone.
