CD REVIEW: Joey and Rory "Album Number Two"
Married couple and country duo Joey and Rory seem to be leading a country music revival. The two experienced sudden success last year with their hit “Cheater, Cheater” and debut album “The Life of a Song.”
They quickly followed up with the album “Album Number Two,” which features a few potential hits and misses.
A traditional country tune, complete with fiddle and lots of twang, opens the sophomore effort from Joey and Rory. The title track is a tongue-in-cheek look back at their success with “The Life of a Song,” and almost a plea to the fans to buy “Album Number Two” (“The critics all are waiting/But it’s really up to you/We’d sure appreciate it/If you bought 'Album Number Two'”).
Joey and Rory would do well to stick with their light and fun tracks like “All You Need Is Me,” a flirtatious little song about a good-looking cowboy.
“Baby I’ll Come Back to You” and “You Ain’t Right” shows off the witty songwriting skills of Rory Lee Feek. The duo tried to balance the album by throwing in slower songs like “Born To Be Your Woman” and “The Horse Nobody Could Ride,” but they might have fared better leaving those two songs off completely.
“God Help My Man” is this album’s “Cheater, Cheater,” and may do well if the country-pop fans are patient enough to get through the slow verses.
The album’s first single “This Song’s For You,” which features the Zac Brown Band is the album’s sappy tribute to the fans. Brown’s vocals add a rich layer to Joey and Rory’s sound, which helps carry the song at the end.
