WHERE THEY ARE NOW: Kalamity Jane
The hair, the shredded stone-washed jeans and most of all the rock ‘n roll. Kalamity Jane joined the ranks of Blind Justice and Savyor as one of the first heavy metal bands in the Valley. They were staples at local hotspots including Pepe's on the River in Mission. Back then it wasn't just another nightly gig, it was considered a full on rock show, equipped with boisterous fans, groupies and all. When Kalamity Jane ran its course some of the members throughout the years moved onto San Antonio and onto other projects. Chris Russell joined Down Satellite and one time member Elias "Bones" Andra joined Pit Bull Daycare and later moved to Los Angeles. These days Chris Russell followed suit and headed to sunny southern California where he is currently attending film school at Columbia College Hollywood. His plans are to become a writer/director. As for the rest of the band, Russell says Steve Pro, got a job in Houston as an architect to the city, then later moved to New Hampshire. Sonny "Daze" Salas still lives in McAllen and is working for Lacks furniture and plays in a band called Vintage Station. The bands drummer, Dennis Lozano, is on the loose somewhere, Russell says. "I haven't talked to or seen him in years. I think he found God or something and may be a preacher if you can imagine that," he said.
Kalamity Jane
- Members: Chris Russell (guitar), Sonny "Daze" Salas (bass), Dennis Lozano (drums), Steve Pro (vocals/keys); later Raul Garza (guitars), Elias "Bones" Andra (drums)
- Started/Ended: 1988 - 1993
- Hometown: Harlingen
- Favorite Venue: There was this little place called Norbie's in San Benito. That was our first bar we played at. We had trouble with the owners at first cause they didn't think we could bring in people cause we played nothing but originals, but a year later it became our home. There were plenty of great venues from back in the day, Sports Time Cafe in Harlingen, Tooly's at the Holiday Inn, The Hangar at the Hotel across the street from the Holiday Inn in Harlingen. Club X in McAllen was a great venue as well.
- Memorable Moment. I guess I would have to say for myself it was that club at the Bahia Mar resort. They would set us up for two nights with two big rooms that connected. After the shows we would partiy on different floors because the bartender and waitresses lived there. Parties that we will never forget. Those were great weekends at the Island.
