Sometimes a song's meaning lies in the music itself rather than lyrics or a song title. For progressive rock band They Mean Us, the meaning of a song is left to the imagination of the listener.

"(‘Better Than Japanese Fun Glasses') is a tribute to our friend Mauri Gudino," said guitarist Micajah Nye. "He came up with the saying and we decided to use it for a song title."

Their writing process doesn't involve elaborate plans such as an old cabin in the woods with a four-track recorder to get that specific lo-fi quality sound. They don't ditch cell phones, TV and work for weeks at a time so they can concentrate on their music; they don't need to escape distractions. Often Nye will come up with a riff or two, present what he's written and the band will combine ideas to create a song.

They Mean Us doesn't want to tell listeners how to feel, but they do want to inspire emotion.
