"The Tiger's Envious Grin" marks Esteban Elizondo's most personal foray into songwriting.
The White Zebra frontman, who pens most of the Brownsville band's lyrics, says he usually just jots down what sounds cool.
This track, however, tackles a weightier subject. "The Tiger's Envious Grin" is about his father and his brother, and what he thinks about them. It's obviously a personal topic. Listen to the song, and you'll understand.
You can find this track on the band's album Empty Your Pockets/Give Us Your Souls. This song closes it out.
The band has also prepared a two-song EP, tentatively titled Mute Languages, which is due before spring. Elizondo says this song has opened him up to more personal songwriting, and he can see White Zebra's lyrics heading in that direction.
"When I write something that's personal, it feels like it means something to me," he says.
