CREATIVE WRITING: ‘Random Adventure' by Daniel Roman

The Monitor

The day hot again, and I sit in my master’s backyard. It seems like every day gets hotter plus boring. Sometimes I wish that my master would give me away to someone more adventurous. I love my master, but why would he name me “Random”, if he wasn’t going to take me on an adventure. I would like to visit a jungle, the Wild West, and somewhere in outer space; it would beat digging up bones.

I went to sleep, and woke up in a jungle! I felt strange, looked around and noticed green everywhere! It was very humid “shucks what weather” I then heard some type of slithering nearby, didn’t think much of it.

“I’ve never seen you around before?” something in the bushes said to me.

“Who’s there?” I asked

“Someone that has been watching you… what’s your name?” the creature asked

“Show yourself!”

I slowly see the creature moving out from behind the bush.

“My God.” I screamed

“Frightened? You should be.” Said the creature

“What are you? What’s your name? I asked

“Well, my name is slither and I’m what’s called a python.” She said

“Oh, I’ve heard about your kind in books, but never taught of meeting one…So, what you do for fun?” I asked him. (The giant snake slithering near me and sizing me up)

“What I do for fun? Well…I eat!” She lashed out at me with her huge mouth open!

Soon after I awoke in what looked to be dessert, there were no green trees and giant snakes. Now, I could just see dry land with cactus plants, and the raging sun. The heat wasn’t humid anymore, but dry. I started getting real thirsty, my mouth also dry and the sun still blazing in my eyes.

“How’s it go there partner?”

A strange creature rolled up. I looked at it closely and studied it.

“Pretty thirsty like a dog I am.” I said

“Yup, I’ll have you know Armadillos get thirsty too.” He said

“Is that what you are? “ I curiously asked

“Yup been one my whole life, names Harold.” He revealed to me.

“Nice meeting you Harold, my names Random.” We spoke a bit more, until a strong wind came.

“Oh boy! Looks like a sandstorm better get some shelter quick. Nice talking with you Random!” he exclaimed to me before rolling off. I tried to catch up with him and ask if I could shelter with him; but the wind blew me to the floor and heavy sand covered me slowly. I couldn’t see!

I dozed off again, but this time a cool air woke me up. My head on a metal floor, I looked up noticing the metal hallway with gadgets hanging on the side walls, slowly made my way across this narrow hall. I see an open doorway on the right, walk in now noticing flashes of different colors. There lay a big red button beneath what look to be a plastic cylinder, curiously enough I pushed it. The cylinder elevated gently and a small green creature leaped down to the floor. He looked around until spotting me behind him.

“Greetings Earthling.” He said (I still in shock that it spoke)

“Uhh, hello.” I said

He then approached me closer and took a whiff of me.

“You are human?” He asked me

“No, I am a dog.” I stated

(He looked puzzled a bit.)

“Greetings dog.” He leaped across me towards a metal chair, jumped on top, and looked outside a window.

“Earth” he said.

(I quickly followed him)

“Wow! It’s Earth, were in outer space!”

Overly excited I said.

We studied the planet carefully, I had never in my life seen something so beautiful; at that moment in space, I began to miss my master, wondering what he’s doing. I looked at the creature; both of us have smirks on our faces we both glance back at Earth one last time before I hear an echo of some voice calling my name.

“Random…Random.” The voice said.

The echo became alive, until I heard my masters voice.

“Random! Wake up boy!”

My master called me! He had my leash on one hand and waved it at me.

“You ready boy! You ready!”

As he put on my leash, I started to reminisce about the dream, and why I had this dream. My master loved me, and I loved him, we have been through some tough times together. So, why would I want to trade it for a jungle, the Wild West, or space? Sometimes being grateful of what we have makes everything alright.
