The Broken Poetz

Broken Poetz

  • The players:

John Alocer - vocals

David Alcocer - vocalist

Jason Salas - vocalist

Franky Rez - guitar

Israel Gomez - drummer

Jared Gomez - bass

  • In a nutshell:

If Lighter Shade of Brown and 311 had a baby it would be in the form of The Broken Poetz. They've got a swagger, some funk and something to say. They're not rapping about ridin' on 25-inch rims or making it rain. Broken Poetz are about life's struggle and how to preservere.

  • Tunes

For the most part, the group has a solid set list. Sometimes they get caught in certain stagnant beats but they manage to squeeze through. Listen for the classical guitar work on "Cheatin'" and the beats on "Two Time Offender" However, "Triste" takes the cake.

  • Lyrics:

The Poetz keep it simple but they spit rhymes in solid syncopation. You try rapping, it's not easy. Songs could use a little more creativity but nothing a little more time on the scene can't fix.

  • What's in a name:

David says, he was thinking of an artist, the purist form of an artist. It's a play on words. To be broken makes it more artistic. From great pain comes great art. The character and idea was inspired by the late Sid Barrett from Pink floyd, the image of a broken poet.

  • Threads:

These guys don't need much help in the style department. There's something about a little hip-hop attire strapped with a guitar that can turn heads. Top it with a little throwback jersey, a newsboy hat and some old school kicks and you got yourself quite an ensemble. Note: if your buddy on stage next to you is lookin' a little run-of-the-mill don't be afraid to put him in check, or take him shopping.

  •  Live show:

Energetic and charismatic. Don't let a little street intimidate you. With a busy stage there's always something to look at.

  •  Date of birth:

Started five years ago with three members, but have been jamming a new lineup for about six months.

  • MySpace Friends:

1,207

  • Who's likely to go solo?

David (Alcocer)

In their own words...

  • 10 Second Pitch:

I think it's much better when you see us play live. We've been doing this for so long and we want it really bad. I believe we're original and we take pride in that. We've been doing this forever. I believe we're at the top of our game. We always try to have our sound very original. We don't try to follow anyon'es footsteps. Let the people choose who's gonna win. May the better band win. Not to take away anything from Jericho Machine but we're gonna give them a run for their money.

  •  Favorite spot to play:

 Simon Sez

  •  In high school we were:

always doing something different; breakdancing, dancing rapping. Always dressed different a little more hip-hop than people down here. It was like they dropped some aliens down in McAllen...to this day people say we are totally different.

  •  What they roll in now:

Some have trucks, but each go in their own cars from gig to gig. They say a van would be really great.

  • Trusty groupie, er, No. 1 fans:

I don't know who's the superfan, but there are a few...everyone on their Top 40 on MySpace are the top supporters.
