ELECTRONICA ARTISTS: Retrovox

The Monitor

Retrovox name describes its sound.

Rey Aguilar, one half of the duo, says the music mixes 80s new wave influences with Italian Disco techno. They use synthesizers to also put their own distinct stamp on it.

"The music we're making has an 80s vibe, so I came up with old words like retro."

Whatever they're doing, fans dig it.

They play to larger crowds than most musicians in and out of their genre. Aguilar even DJs ever Friday at the hot uptown night spot Los Cazadores de Vox. Aguilar says he's doing well, because the whole scene has evolved.

And he credits the Internet. Aguilar grew up listening to electronica, starved for new content. His older brother often brought him albums from cities in northern Mexico. But he couldn't find any in the Valley.

Now he makes his own.
