A Q&A with country bad boys Reckless Kelly

October 15, 2008 - 11:15 AM

Cody Braun, guitarist for the Austin-based country band Reckless Kelly, gave Festiva a call last week. Here's what we asked about the band, which is touring now in support of its seventh studio album.

Festiva: Where did you guys get your name from?

Cody Braun: It's named after the Australian bank robber Ned Kelly. They called him Reckless Kelly. We came across the name in school, and we always thought it was kind of cool. We decided to name the band that, and we weren't really planning on sticking with it, but it worked out.

Festiva: How have fans been reacting to Bulletproof, the album you guys released in June?

Cody Braun: It's been great. It's gotten great reviews and great response from the fans. We just got the second single released on Texas radio and we got a video coming out this week. We're ready to hit the road.

Festiva: You guys have played the Valley before, what do you think of it?

Cody Braun: We actually played there a couple of years ago with ZZ Top. It was great. Plenty warm if you like the heat. [Laughs]

Festiva: What's the biggest honor you guys have ever had?

Cody Braun: Probably getting to record with Steve Earle, and we also got to record with Joe Ely in Austin. Getting to record with some of our heroes like that has been really, really fun.

Festiva: You and your brother Willy both play in the band, do you ever have sibling fighting?

Cody Braun: We get along real well. There's some times when we disagree on some things, but we get along pretty well. We try to just keep it to a "(expletive) you" in the hallway.
