ALTON — Hidalgo County sheriff's deputies hope to confirm the identity today of a woman found dead northeast of the city.
A farmworker discovered the woman's body just after 4 p.m. Tuesday about a quarter of a mile west of Glasscock Road on 8 Mile Line, Sheriff Lupe Treviño said.
She had sustained at least one bullet wound to the upper torso and appeared to have been shot sometime around noon that day.
Investigators found photocopies of state identification cards on the body that suggest she may have been a 34-year-old McAllen resident but have not yet confirmed the IDs belong to the dead woman, Treviño said.
Deputies hope to match the body's fingerprints to those taken by McAllen police during previous arrests of the woman identified in the documents. That woman had previously been charged with drug possession and violations of public morals, investigators said.
The sheriff refused to release the woman's name pending a positive identification.
"From there, we'll create a full background profile on her and try to find out who she might have been with last," he said.
