Verizon asking for cell phones for domestic violence victims
Verizon is asking Rio Grande Valley residents to donate used cell phones to help fight domestic abuse this Valentine's Day.
The company collects used phones and gives free minutes to victims of domestic violence so that they can reach emergency or support services in their time of need. Victims can also use the phones to reach family members and friends.
Since October 2001, Verizon's HopeLine program has distributed more than 76,000 phones with more than 228 million minutes of free wireless service nationwide to victims of domestic violence.
There were more cases of domestic violence reported in Hidalgo County last year than ever before, said Mujeres Unidas director Estella De Anda in a Verizon news release.
"The HopeLine program provides a lifeline for women, men and children in abusive relationships and allows them to call for help when they are in danger, and ultimately saves lives," De Anda said in the release.
To donate a phone, visit Verizon at 4312 N. 10th St. or 2107 S. 10th St. in McAllen.
