McALLEN — Police officers were swamped with vandalism complaints Tuesday night after 13 North McAllen residents discovered the rear windshields of their vehicles had been shattered, officials said.

Police have few leads in the case, although officers suspect the windows were shot at using an air gun, said Sgt. Joel Morales, a spokesman for the McAllen Police Department.

The department is offering a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest or indictment of the criminals.

Investigators believe the shooter may have been riding inside a small green passenger vehicle.

"We don't know who these people are," Morales said, adding that a motive was yet unclear.

Suspects would likely face Class A or Class B misdemeanor charges of criminal mischief. Class A misdemeanors are punishable by up to one year in county jail and a possible fine of up to $4,000 upon conviction.
