Honor thy mother
Comments 0 | Recommend 0McALLEN - Martha Treviño had a Luby's lunch for Mother's Day.
But more importantly, the Edinburg mother of two said she enjoyed that meal with her family.
That's all she wanted for the holiday, she said.
"The food was fine, but I told them, ‘spend today with me,'" said Treviño, standing outside the Luby's on North 10th Street on Sunday with her family.
Treviño recently moved from El Paso with her husband, Roberto, and children Javier, 4, and Maria, 3. They attended a church service earlier in the day before lunch. Martha said she didn't want too fancy of a day.
They joined thousands of other families celebrating Mother's Day this weekend in the Rio Grande Valley.
Sunday marked Mother's Day, the 100th since its start at a church in West Virginia, according to The Associated Press. That day in 1908, a woman wished to honor the memory of her mother, as well as other mothers across the world.
This weekend, restaurants across the Valley offered discounts and free appetizers for mothers.
On Saturday, La Plaza Mall hosted an event for children to make arts and crafts with Mother's Day themes while their mothers received makeovers from beauty store Sephora.
Ruben De La Cruz hosted a Mother's Day dance at La Lomita Park, complete with Puro Conjunto music.
And the South Texas Youth Symphony ended its concert season Sunday afternoon with its annual Mother's Day concert at the UTPA Fine Arts Auditorium. Mothers enjoyed free admission if they paid for children.
While Mother's Day is celebrated the second Sunday of each May in the United States, in Mexico it is marked on May 10 of each year.
So, at a commencement ceremony for the University of Texas-Pan American on Saturday afternoon, university President Blandina Cárdenas asked all the students to stand for a special Dia de las Madres salute.
She had them face their mothers and blow hugs and kisses to them.
After all, no one would be here without their mother.
