Don't Mess with Texas auditions are tomorrow

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND - Do you love Texas and have no summer plans?

If so, the "Don't Mess With Texas" campaign might be interested in giving you something to do.

Open auditions to become the 2009 Don't Mess With Texas Summer Intern will be held Friday at South Padre Island Visitors Centre and at the Convention & Visitors Bureau, 600 Padre Blvd., from noon to 6 p.m.

"The Department of Transportation, which manages the Don't Mess with Texas litter prevention campaign, is casting three young Texans to serve as summer interns to teach their peers not to litter," a TxDOT press release states. "TxDOT research reveals that the state's worst litterers are Texans ages 16 to 24, also called Gen L or Generation Litterer."

"Don't Mess with Texas is hiring campaign interns who understand how to use social media and other creative tactics to reach their Internet-savvy peers," the release states.

The three winning interns will represent the Don't Mess with Texas campaign at concerts, sporting events, mall appearences and other public events across the state.
A camera crew will video record the interns' travels and experiences for Webisodes that will air on the campaign's Web site.

Intern candidates will audition for three judges and a camera crew will record the auditions and post highlight on to the campaingn's Web site.

Young people auditioning must be at least 21 years old, a Texas resident and must show a valid Texas driver's liscense and completed intern application at the audition.
Persons trying out must be available to live in Austin in June and July.

Judges will select two the interns based on their auditon and application responses. The third winner will be selected by an online vote from April 13 through May 1.

Interested persons who cannot attend the auditions can also apply for the intern position online or via mail.
