Police warn of recent telephone scam

Valley Morning Star

HARLINGEN — Police are warning the public of a financial scam circulating in the area.

Police recently received a report based on information provided by a local resident. According to the information, an unknown man has been calling local residents claiming he represents a U.S. government grant program, police said.

The caller claims his firm will pay participants a specified amount of grant money, but that a processing fee would have to be sent in lieu of the grant money, police said.

The caller than provides an account number in India and states the money must be sent through Western Union, police said.

Harlingen police urge anyone receiving telephone calls, letters, email or any other type of correspondence that requests money to use prudence and caution, officials said.

Anyone with questions or information regarding the latest scam, or any other type of scheme requesting money, can call the Harlingen Police Department at (956) 216-5441 or their local law enforcement agency, HPD said.
