STC's Veteran Memorial Scholarship Program gets a little help from a friend
South Texas College is committed to helping veterans realize their educational goals so they can continue to serve their country as civilians. In 2009, STC’s Veteran’s Affairs Department established a scholarship program to provide student veterans with much-needed financial assistance. During the fall semester, Roberto Montes and Edward Contreras became the first recipients of the award, and organizers were looking for ways to raise money for the next round of scholarships for the spring semester.
This led STC Veteran’s Affairs Coordinator Javier Arredondo to team up with student and Iraq War vet Rey Leal to seek sponsors to contribute to their cause. They didn’t need to look any further than in their own backyard. The Vipers basketball team was happy to help and invited Leal and Arredondo to take part in their Veteran’s Appreciation Night.
After the game ended that night, the team auctioned off autographed jerseys – made with camouflaged material, of course – and this helped the STC group raise $1,800 for the scholarship program.
“We are so appreciative of the Vipers’ generosity, especially because the proceeds from the auction will help pay for at least three scholarships for our student veterans,” said Arredondo. “Many veterans must finance their own education and their G.I. Bill often runs out before they graduate. We want to provide vets with the support and encouragement to keep pursuing their goals. It’s the least that we can do for these veterans who have risked their lives for our freedom, and we hope that others will realize the importance of this program and help us continue to open the doors of opportunities for these individuals who need it most.”
The hope is to award two $500 Veteran Memorial scholarships per semester. If you are interested in learning more about how you can contribute call 956-872-6723.
