EDINBURG - Police continue to look for two men involved in a drive-by shooting at a residential neighborhood Saturday that sent three men to the hospital with injuries.

The gunfight broke out between two vehicles at the 2800 block of Gayle Street about 4:30 p.m. Saturday, said Edinburg Police Chief Quirino Muñoz.

Investigators believe an argument at a convenience store near the intersection of Sugar and Chapin roads earlier in the afternoon may have prompted the gunfire. Some stray bullets struck a house at 2807 Gayle St., but police do not believe the address was the shooters' target, Muñoz said.

"Apparently they ran into each other and they exchanged gunfire as the vehicles were traveling," he said.

After officers first learned of the shooting, police received a call from Edinburg Regional Hospital officials about 4:45 p.m. that three men had shown up with gunshot wounds.

The men, aged 21, 22 and 41 years old - all from Edinburg - were traveling in a black Dodge Caliber were injured during the shooting, Muñoz said. They continue to recover from minor injuries at the hospital.

No bystanders in the neighborhood were injured during the gunfire.

Police continue to look for two Hispanic men who were traveling in a small, black Chevrolet passenger vehicle that fled the scene after the gunfire, Muñoz said. Investigators believe the men traveling in the Chevrolet fired a large-caliber rifle and the Dodge responded with a pistol.

"We have not found any underlying circumstances to lead us to believe (the shooting) is gang related," Muñoz said.

Whether any of the injured men will face criminal charges remains unclear, Muñoz said. Officers continued to investigate the shooting Monday afternoon.

"This is hard to comprehend because it's so dangerous and reckless," Muñoz said.
