San Carlos tire shop robbed, one of two men robbers escape

SAN CARLOS – Police arrested one of two men they believe robbed a tire shop early Friday morning.

Deputies from the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 1:57 a.m. aggravated robbery call that two armed men entered a tire shop south of Highway 107 on 86th Street. Authorities did not disclose what the men took from the store.

The two took off in a white Mazda. An officer patrolling the area tried to pull the car over, but it drove away. The chase ended when the car crashed in a ditch near Curve and Tower road in Edinburg.

Officers apprehended one suspect and the other fled.

The suspect who was arrested is charged with aggravated assault — changed from an earlier aggravated robbery charge — and is in jail, the sheriff’s office dispatch said.

The robbery attempt is the third aggravated robbery call sheriff’s deputies have responded to in the past three days. On Wednesday, armed robbers broke into an Alamo home at 7:40 p.m. and stole $50 from their victims, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

Less than a half-hour later, two men stole a truck at gunpoint in Weslaco and used the vehicle to lead authorities on a chase through several cities, officials said.

Officers continue to search for the second suspect in Friday’s robbery.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office Crime Stoppers hotline at (956) 668-TIPS.
