REYNOSA — Four men were killed during a confrontation between the Mexican military and a convoy of men armed with grenades and bazookas, according to Mexican media reports.

The four killed apparently fought the military with grenades and bazookas, according to the Reforma news agency. Several people, including three federal police officers and a bystander, were reportedly injured.

The standoff occurred about 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Aldama and Luis Echeverría, about four blocks south of the Rio Grande and west of Reynosa's downtown square, according to the Reforma report.

The standoff occurred near the city's infamous Zona de Tolerancia, commonly known as "Boys Town," which hosts several strip clubs and bars.

The confrontation happened after a military convoy pursued several SUVs near the south side of the Rio Grande. Authorities were able to follow one of the SUVs to Luis Echeverría, where the vehicle crashed and the men inside came out and began firing at the soldiers with rifles and grenades, Reforma reported.

A white van then came to the scene and fired gunshots at the soldiers and federal police. The men reportedly attacked with grenades during the 15-minute standoff, according to the Reforma report.

Roads were clogged with traffic near the attack and slowed police and emergency crews from responding to the scene.

Authorities set up checkpoints across the city and reportedly closed traffic to the downtown area after the standoff.

The bystander injured during the attack was a man seeking help at the Casa del Migrante, according to the Reforma report. The migrant house provides assistants to people who recently arrived in the city.
