Police: Man kidnaps daughter at knifepoint, returns her to family unharmed
Comments 0 | Recommend 0ALTON -- Police are still looking for a man they say kidnapped his daughter at knifepoint and later returned her Sunday.
Sgt. Mike Luna of the Alton Police Department said 44-year-old Sergio Veliz took his daughter around 1:30 p.m. after a domestic dispute involving himself, his common law wife and her relatives.
The details of the dispute were not known, Luna said, but police believe Veliz took his 1-year-old daughter and pulled a knife on his brothers-in-law when they tried to take the child from him.
Veliz and the child were gone for about an hour and a half when Veliz returned the child to her aunt. The aunt then returned the child to her mother, Luna said.
"She's fine. She's not hurt at all," Luna said about the child.
No one was injured during the incident, the sergeant said.
Veliz was last seen driving a green Ford Ranger with Illinois plates, Luna said. Police plan to file charges aggravated assault charges against him.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Alton Police Department at (956) 581-2602.
