BROWNSVILLE -- A worker mowing grass near an irrigation canal Thursday morning stumbled upon the remains of a human body.

The skeletal remains were discovered by a Cameron County Irrigation District employee mowing grass in a rural area near an irrigation canal off Torres Road, about a quarter-mile north of Military Highway.

The sex of the person has not been determined, but the remains appear to be several weeks old, according to police.

"The remains have been given to a pathologist," police spokesman Sgt. Juan Lopez said.

"Depending on the word we get from her, our investigation will continue from there."
