Progreso man charged with child molestation

PROGRESO — A Progreso man was arraigned Thursday for the alleged sexual assault a preteen girl, police said.

Elijio Vera Maldonado, a Mexican national living in Progreso, was charged with two counts of aggravated sexual assault and one count of indecency with a child and is being held in lieu of $300,000 bail, said Oscar Garcia, the lead investigator in the case.

The girl’s mother reported Maldonado to Progreso police Nov. 16, Garcia said.

Maldonado was booked at the Hidalgo County Jail on Thursday night.
