Pharr murder victim identified

The Monitor

PHARR — A man opened the door to a shop Wednesday evening, fired three shots and ran away.

The gunshots killed the store's clerk, 30-year-old Albert Garcia, police said.

"The shooter just went up to the door, shot from the door and left," said Pharr police Lt. Guadalupe Salinas. "He took off running."

Officers responded to the scene at Fir Street and Evans Avenue about 7:09 p.m. Wednesday.

No one else inside the store witnessed the fatal shooting of Garcia, of McAllen, and the store has no security cameras, Salinas said.

Police have not identified the shooter and have virtually no details about his appearance.

"We haven't established a motive," Salinas said. "Maybe he was mistaken for somebody else, but we're still trying to figure that out."

Police said Wednesday night that officers are looking for a maroon and brown 1997 Chevrolet Tahoe or a GMC Yukon bearing Texas license plate number PMP744.

Officials said Wednesday night that the shooter showed up that evening and asked Garcia to cash a personal check. Garcia explained that he was out of cash and the shooter later returned and shot the man in the chest.

Salinas disputed that the shooter actually showed up to cash a check, saying he shot from the door and fled the area.
