Remote post office robbed

LOPEÑO - Two men robbed the local post office Friday afternoon and made off with an undisclosed amount of money, a postal inspector said Monday.

Around 4:30 p.m. Friday, two men entered the post office in Lopeño - 23 miles north of Roma - threatened the postmaster with a knife and made off with an undisclosed amount of money, said Michael Martinez, a U.S. Postal Service inspector based in McAllen.

Both men appeared to be in their early 20s and were wearing faded blue jeans and dark blue baseball caps. One man was clad in a red and white polo shirt, while the other was wearing a light blue polo shirt, Martinez said.

Lopeño is a town of 140 residents that sits along U.S. Highway 83 right across the Zapata County line. The postmaster is the local post office's only employee.

The U.S. Postal Service asks for anyone with information about the robbery to call their office at (956) 971-1721.

Anyone with information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspects could receive up to a $50,000 reward.
