U.S. Consulate in Monterrey issues new warning about Mexico violence as casualties mount
REYNOSA — Two gunmen were killed and two soldiers injured after the gunmen attacked Mexican soldiers on patrol in Reynosa early Tuesday morning, according to a news release from the Mexican Defense Ministry.
The Mexican military seized 18 military-style uniforms made in North America, four vehicles, two rifles, 44 ammunition magazines and 1,052 rounds of ammunition after the shootout ended.
Attacks on the Mexican military along the border are not uncommon. On April 1, 18 gunmen were killed in Reynosa after staging several attacks on the Mexican military, and in May a weekend of violent shootouts left six dead and five injured.
An official travel advisory from the U.S. Consulate in Monterrey warns of the dangerous conditions in northern Mexico:
“The security situation on roads south of the border between Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua and Matamoros, Tamaulipas has been marked by unpredictable violence.”
The bulletin also states that starting July 15, “U.S. Mission in Mexico personnel and their families may not drive across the Texas border between, and including, Ciudad Juarez and Matamoros on official travel.”
This comes almost five months after a U.S. Consulate worker and her husband were gunned down in their car yards away from the U.S. border after leaving a child’s birthday party.
