Shootout at Matamoros shopping center kills one
Mexican news organizations are reporting that a shootout at a Matamoros shopping center between Mexican army troops and alleged drug cartel members left one person dead and two injured.
The shooting is said to have occurred Saturday evening at the Plaza Fiesta shopping center at the intersection of Calle Sexta and Boulevard Manuel Cavazos Lerma.
Reportedly, the shooting occurred between Mexican soldiers and the occupants of a four-door pickup and the occupants of a black Cadillac Escalade, eyewitness said. Mexican law enforcement officials were not available for comment Saturday night or Sunday night, and couldn’t confirm details of the shootout.
Mauricio, a teenager who was at the mall but refused to state his full name, said the firefight began in the mall’s parking lot and moved inside of the mall when some of the alleged cartel member tried to get away.
"They were shooting inside back and forth there were a lot of soldiers and other guys on the floor. I don’t know if they were dead or not," he said.
Matamoros newspaper El Bravo reported that the shooting resulted in the death of one of the SUV passengers and left two other occupants injured.
