More than 9,000 pounds of pot seized in weekend Border Patrol busts
McALLEN — U.S. Border Patrol agents reported more than $7.2 million worth of marijuana — at least 9,000 pounds — seized between Thursday and Sunday across the Rio Grande Valley sector.
One seizure occurred Thursday morning when a Rio Grande City-based agent approached a man parked in a Ford F-250 pickup truck in a wooded area, according to an agency release. The man was arrested after a brief foot pursuit. Nearly 1,000 pounds of pot was found inside a fake fuel tank on the truck.
Agents also found more than 1,300 pounds of marijuana after several people scattered from a wooded area near Cuevitas on Saturday. No arrests were made.
Another 1,000 pounds of pot was seized Saturday near Granjeño, where an agent saw a green Chevrolet Suburban speeding. The SUV driver went over a levee, lost control and the vehicle flipped on its side, agents said.
Border Patrol's Rio Grande Valley sector stretches from western Starr County to the Gulf Coast and north of Corpus Christi.
