Energy company opens McAllen office, plans job fair
McALLEN — Green Mountain Energy Co. will host a job fair Tuesday to find staff for its new McAllen office, the Austin-based utility company said Thursday.
Green Mountain expects to hire at least 20 people to sell its electrical services throughout the Rio Grande Valley as part of a larger effort by the company to expand its footprint in the area, officials said.
“Despite the economic freefall … Green Mountain is growing,” said Vanessa Montelongo, market manager for the Valley. “We need people.”
Green Mountain, which buys all its electricity from wind farms in West Texas, said it has made substantial gains in the Valley’s electrical market since it began local promotional efforts in 2007. Marci Grossman, a spokeswoman for the privately owned company, declined to say how many Valley customers Green Mountain has.
The new McAllen office, at 1400 N. McColl Road, Suite 202, represents the energy company’s first major expansion outside Austin, Dallas and Houston — a move Grossman said was made because of the Valley’s continued growth, its strong reception to earlier promotional efforts and its unique border culture.
Green Mountain was not accustomed to bilingual sales before its expansion efforts in the Valley, she added.
The job fair will be 1-7 p.m. Tuesday at the company’s McColl office. Applicants are expected to bring résumés. For more information on the available positions, go to www.greenmountain.com.
