VIDEO: 7 sent to hospital after rollover in McAllen
Comments 0 | Recommend 0McALLEN — Ambulances transported a family of seven to the hospital after a rollover about noon Monday.
The accident happened at the intersection of South 23rd Street and East Expressway 83 frontage.
A white Dodge minivan from Durango, Dur., Mexico was headed east along the inside lane of the frontage road when it attempted to go straight through a left turn lane and collided with a cargo truck that was turning left from the middle lane, police said.
The impact caused the van to roll over at least one time, ejecting a woman from inside the vehicle.
Juan Pablo De La Rosa was stopped in the outside northbound lane of 23rd Street when he saw the accident happen.
"I saw the van jumping in the air," De La Rosa said, adding that the woman was thrown from the van and landed beside the vehicle.
"It was a miracle" the ejected woman was not killed, De La Rosa said.
The van's driver and six passengers were hospitalized for their injuries, with two people suffering serious injuries, police said. The truck's driver was not injured in the wreck and declined to comment.
The family's van was filled with suitcases of merchandise from a shopping excursion with other relatives from Nuevo Leon and Jalisco states in Mexico, relatives said.
Dozens of spectators stood in the parking lot of a Jack In The Box restaurant adjacent to the accident scene, with some saying they heard an explosion during the wreck. Police said the noise happened after one of the van's tires popped.
Police continue to investigate the accident and whether any criminal charges may be filed against the van's driver.
