High wildfire potential today in Hidalgo, Starr counties
BROWNSVILLE — An elevated wildfire exists through Thursday afternoon, National Weather Service meteorologists said.
Southeast winds gusting to 30 mph alongside dry afternoon humidity between 35 and 45 percent will increase the wildfire potential in the area west of U.S. Highway 281 in Hidalgo, Brooks, and all of Starr, Jim Hogg and Starr counties.
Forecasters say conditions fall just short of what would qualify for a "Red Flag Warning," the advisory typically issued when there is a strong potential for wildfires to develop.
Residents are urged to exercise caution during outside activities that could cause wildfires, such as using welding and grading equipment near weeds and grass. Do not park vehicles in tall, dry grass. Avoid tossing cigarettes from vehicles.
Burn bans remain in effect in Hidalgo and Starr counties. People are advised to call authorities immediately if any wildfires are observed.
