Man dead after San Juan shooting

SAN JUAN — Police are searching for a man who fatally shot another man during an attempted robbery.
The shooting occurred about 8 p.m. today at Amigo Propane Co. near the intersection of Cesar Chavez Road and Farm-to-Market Road 495, said San Juan police spokesman Rolando Garcia.
On Thursday, police identified the victim as Juan Garza, owner of Amigo Propane Inc.
Authorities searched the area using all-terrain vehicles, dogs and helicopters. Law enforcement agencies at the scene included the Texas Department of Public Safety and Mission, Palmview, Pharr and San Juan police.
Garza was taken to a local hospital in critical condition and later died there, Garcia said.
Investigators believe the shooter approached Garza at the propane business where the victim worked and asked the man to fill his tank, Garcia said. The would-be customer then asked the man for money and shot him.
The shooter, believed to be in his mid-20s, is 5 feet 8 inches, with a slim build, and was wearing a white shirt and jeans, Garcia said. He was last seen running into some orchards near the propane business, and authorities believe he had been driving a dark Toyota Camry.
"The suspect is armed and dangerous," Garcia said. "We're going to stay here as long the dogs keep picking up his scent."
Authorities are still examining the crime scene and trying to gather evidence. They also are questioning a juvenile in connection with the shooting.
