LA JOYA -- A chase involving a group of immigrants packed into a pickup truck ended in a rollover early Tuesday morning.

La Joya Police responded to a call about a suspicious vehicle loading suspected undocumented illegal immigrants near Ebony Street and U.S. Highway 83 in La Joya about 7:10 a.m. Tuesday, officers said.

After officers observed the Ford F-150 pickup truck disregard a stop sign, they pursued it along U.S. 83 from La Joya to Mission. The truck exited at Bryan Road, where it rolled over near Mission Medical Center, said La Joya police Lt. Julian Gutierrez.

In all, 16 people from Mexico, El Salvador and Honduras were in the pickup's bed at the time of the rollover, Gutierrez said. Three immigrants evaded authorities and three others are at Mission Medical Center receiving treatment for their injuries.

The truck's driver is currently in police custody and is pending federal and state charges, Gutierrez said.
