Kids invited to interact with nature

The Monitor

WESLACO — The Kid’s Nature Club offers Rio Grande Valley children an opportunity to interact with the region’s nature. The club meets the first Saturday of each month from December to May.

The Kids’ Nature Club, hosted by the Estero Llano Grande State Park and the Valley Nature Center, is in its fourth year and is meant to be fun and educational.

“Kids don’t have the opportunities to explore nature, get enough exercise while playing outside and commune in nature with other children their ages,” Susan Hoehne, the education director at Valley Nature Center said in a written statement.

The club will start the trips Dec. 5 and will finish May 8, 2010, followed by an adios party and a camp out May 28.

The cost for the entire season is $90 per child. The non-profit will have scholarships. But the club only has capacity for 15 children.

Some of this season’s destinations will include Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, Starr County, South Padre Island and a canoe trip on the Rio Grande.

To sign up or for more information, contact Susan Hoehne at Valley Nature Center – (956) 969-2475 or shoehne@valleynaturecenter.org.
