Authorities evacuate homes after gas leak

WESLACO -- Authorities evacuated about 35 people about 7 p.m. Saturday after city crews working to repair a water main accidently struck a gas line, officials said.

The line is expected to be capped on the block north of Calle de Colorado and West Plaza Street and families will be allowed to return to their homes by midnight, said George Garrett, Weslaco emergency management coordinator.

"As soon as we get the gas turned off and make sure the gas levels are low enough (the evacuation will end)," he said about 10:30 p.m. Saturday.

The city has apparently experienced several water main breaks in recent days, Garrett said.
