Former U.S. Rep., wife, out of ICU
Former U.S. Rep. Kika de la Garza and his wife, Lucille, are out of intensive care after a car crash that sent them there almost two weeks ago.
On Sunday, the couple moved to the rehabilitation side of Doctor's Hospital at Renaissance where they are being evaluated today, their daughter, Angela de la Garza, said Monday.
The two were driving on Dove Avenue in McAllen on Sept. 16 when a two-car crash sent one of the vehicles hurtling into the de la Garza's vehicle.
The drivers of the other two vehicles were not seriously injured, but the de la Garzas required surgery for several bone fractures and have been recuperating in intensive care.
Angela de la Garza said doctors should have a better idea of how long the two would be in rehab after a couple of days of evaluation.
"They are doing fine, they are recovering and looking forward to being back, hopefully before Election Day," Angela de la Garza said. "They really appreciate all the prayers and well wishes from everyone."
The former U.S. representative served in Congress from 1965 to 1997.
