Nearly 2 tons of marijuana seized

EDINBURG — U.S. Border Patrol agents seized nearly 4,000 pounds of marijuana while patrolling on foot in Hidalgo County.

Agents assigned to the agency’s McAllen station were walking a trail known to be used for human and narcotics smuggling when they found several abandoned bundles of marijuana with a combined weight of 440 pounds, according to a news release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The discovery followed one earlier in the afternoon when agents trekking through the brush near Escobares seized 367 pounds of marijuana.

An additional four seizures throughout the Border Patrol’s Rio Grande Valley Sector brings the total value of seized marijuana to more than $3 million.

Several arrests were made in connection with some of the seizures. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration continues to investigate.
