Edinburg teen killed riding bike late at night

EDINBURG – An 18-year-old Edinburg man was killed early Sunday morning, struck by an intoxicated driver while he was riding a bicycle.

Alejandro Arellano is accused of hitting Abner Soto Jr., on Mile 17 1/2 just east of Terry Road in north Edinburg, said Trooper Johnny Hernandez, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Soto and a 17-year-old friend were riding against traffic on the westbound lane of the road about 1:46 a.m. when Arellano allegedly struck both riders, Hernandez said.

The other teen was transported to McAllen Medical Center where he remains in stable condition.

Arellano allegedly left the scene after the wreck, but police found the car abandoned nearby, Hernandez said. Arellano was arrested and charged with intoxicated manslaughter.

Arellano faces up to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine if convicted of the second-degree felony.
