EDINBURG -- Authorities have yet been able to identity a bicyclist killed along U.S. Expressway 281 late Saturday night.

Edinburg Police Chief Quirino Muñoz said the man wasn't carrying an I.D.

He was trying to cross the southbound lanes of the expressway on his bicycle. He was struck by a 1996 Ford van driven by William Gonzalez, 50, of Edinburg, the police chief said.

The man -- described as Hispanic, in his late 30s or early 40s and about 5 feet 5 inches tall -- was riding a gray Roadmaster Fury bicycle with red stripes, Muñoz said.

Hidalgo County Justice of the Peace Rosa Treviño pronounced the man dead at the scene and ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of his death.

Investigators await the results of the autopsy and a blood test from Gonzalez to find out whether he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the collision, Muñoz said.

If you may know the identity of the bicyclist killed, contact Edinburg police at (956) 388-0501.
