After several line up changes, McAllen-based punk rockers Jonestown Tragedy have found perfect chemistry.

The band spent three months last year on hiatus, but they came back together in November, adding a female bass player to the mix. It's a rare move for a Valley punk band, and not exactly common for bands elsewhere. But it works.

Maybe it's the female touch or maybe the band has just found five people dedicated to making thrashing, three-cord punk rock music. Lead singer Joey Echavarria says the group has reached new levels of cohesion. Everyone in the band gets psyched for shows, and that's a good thing, because Jonestown has gigged constantly lately.

They've played Simon Sez, Smoking Aces, Newman's Bar and Grill - name the Valley rock venue and they've been there. With the money from those engagements, the group shelled out for professional mixing and recording time. The result is a five song EP due on June 3. They're dropping it in it in a big way. That night Jonestown Tragedy will open for popular San Antonio rockers Girl in a Coma at Smoking Aces.

"We funded this whole album strictly off of shows," Echavarria says. "All the shows we've been playing, all the money we've been making, we put it all aside. We didn't split it five ways, all that money has gone to recording and merchandise."

So what's the best song of the five? The band points to "Now and Then," a melodic tune loaded with strong riffs. Guitarist Bizmark Robles wrote the music, and Echavarria crafted the lyrics, which are largely about a relationship falling apart. If things keep going this smoothly chemistry-wise for Jonestown, they'll probably never relate to that topic.
