Voters to consider issues in seven Hidalgo County cities
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Beyond the statewide constitutional amendments, voters in seven Hidalgo County cities will also consider issues.
Below is a summary of those elections.
City of McAllen
Two propositions are on the ballot regarding labor contract disputes. Proposition 1 would amend the city charter so the mayor and the city commission keep the right to make decisions on contract issues by prohibiting outside arbitration. Proposition 2 amends the city charter to require that certain contract disputes affecting fire and police employees would be decided by arbitrators.
City of Palmhurst
A proposition is on the ballot for voters to decide whether to fund the city’s police force an additional 10 years through a half-cent sales tax.
Brush Country
Voters in a sliver of two northern Hidalgo County precincts — Precinct 19 and Precinct 24 — will consider creating a groundwater conservation district in the brush country. The district could levy taxes at a rate not to exceed 3 cents for each $100 of property values.
City of Peñitas
The Board of Alderman added a proposition to the ballot after receiving a petition requesting that all area north of 2 Mile Line and south of 3 Mile Line be removed from the city limits.
City of Progreso
Voters will decide whether a commission should be chosen to frame a new city charter. If they approve the selection of a charter commission, they will select 15 names — from a list of 15 — on who will draft the new charter.
Progreso school district
An $8.25 million bond issue is on the ballot for the school district in Progreso.
City of Alamo:
Voters will elect city commissioners in place 1 and place 3. They’ll also determine whether the city’s municipal judge should be elected every four years.
