Gulf Cartel infighting ignites in streets of Reynosa, Matamoros, Valle Hermoso

The Monitor

As the Gulf Cartel’s internal struggle continues, the residents of Reynosa, Matamoros and Valle Hermoso have been subjected to various firefights.

In one of those firefights, the plaza boss of Valle Hermoso — a man known as Comandante Guerra — reportedly was gunned down.

The firefights between the Gulf Cartel’s warring factions — the Rojos and the Metros — began Tuesday evening and continued into late Wednesday morning, said a source outside law enforcement familiar with the situation. The first clash was reported in Valle Hermoso, some 18 miles south of Brownsville, where Comandante Guerra was gunned down.

About 8 p.m. Tuesday, shootouts and blockades were set up in Matamoros and Reynosa, reportedly lasting throughout the night.

In Matamoros, the conflicts took place in Sección 16 and Puerto Rico neighborhoods, with blockades in numerous avenues.

In Reynosa, the firefights were reported in Colonia Las Cumbres, El Olmo and along Boulevard Hidalgo.

Wednesday morning in Matamoros, firefights sprang up again and moved around several areas, including the area known as Empalme and along the highway to Valle Hermoso.

Casualty numbers were not readily available Wednesday night, but one law enforcement official said that in Reynosa, not a single person died. Matamoros officials said no casualties were reported in their city, either.
