Valley man gets reprieve from death row

Rogelio Cannady, of La Feria, who was set to die today for the 1993 killing of a fellow prisoner, but his execution date was withdrawn Monday by state District Judge Ronald Yeager.

Cannady's recently appointed appeals lawyer asked for more time to review the case, and the judge agreed.

Cannady was serving a life sentence for the July 1990 murder of Ana Robles, 13, of Brownsville, and Ricardo Garcia, 16, of Freer.

Their bodies were found in irrigation canals near La Feria in late June and July 1990, according to Brownsville Herald archives.

Cannady, who was 18 at the time of the killings, was one of four teens convicted of the murders.
