Brownsville man indicted in stabbing death of estranged wife's friend

The Brownsville Herald

BROWNSVILLE — A state grand jury in Cameron County has indicted a Brownsville man accused in the stabbing death of a friend of his estranged wife.

Gilberto Garza Jr., 42, was indicted on a murder charge Wednesday in the killing of Ruth Ramirez Salcedo, 46, also of Brownsville, the Cameron County District Attorney’s Office reported.

The homicide happened July 12 at the home of Garza’s estranged wife, Sulia Garza, at 28 E. Cowan Terrace.

Brownsville police said Gilberto Garza killed Salcedo by stabbing her more than 11 times in the chest and neck. She was found in the kitchen of Sulia Garza’s home.

Police said Salcedo had rushed to the home to defend Sulia Garza against her husband.

Authorities discovered Salcedo’s body following a domestic disturbance between a couple at the residence.

Gilberto Garza was arrested two days later when he was found in the bathroom of the master bedroom at the East Cowan Terrace home, authorities said.

If convicted of murder, a first-degree felony, Gilberto Garza could face up to life in prison. He remains incarcerated at the Carrizales-Rucker Detention Center in Olmito in lieu of a $1 million bond.
